You ask the scale question and a teacher answers 2. Then, almost as an afterthought, she tells you why, and the why is the whole finding. In most fieldwork the number goes into one place and the sentence goes into a notebook, a memory, or nowhere. By the time you sit down to analyze, you have a column of scores and a vague recollection of what they meant, and the integration you promised in your proposal is already gone. MM Field Studio exists so the number and the reason stay attached from the first second you collect them.
Capture the number and the why in the same breath
MM Field Studio pairs every quantitative item with an optional why follow-up, and it asks you to name how the two relate. Does the explanation explain the number, expand on it, complicate it, or is there a telling silence, a person who gave a rating but would not say more? That relationship, Explains, Expands, Complicates, or Silence, is the heart of mixed-methods work, and here you record it in the moment instead of reconstructing it weeks later from two separate files. You are not collecting a quantitative dataset and a qualitative dataset to reconcile at your desk. You are capturing the join as it happens.
The rest of the story, in the participant's own voice
Some explanations are too rich to type. MM Field Studio records the spoken answer and turns it into searchable text on the device itself, tied to that exact response, with no cloud account and no per-minute cost, working even where there is no signal. When words are not enough, you sketch with Apple Pencil right on the case, and you attach whatever the moment produced: a photo, a scanned document, a PDF, a field file. The full texture of a session, the rating, the reason, the drawing, the artifact, stays with the case it belongs to instead of scattering across your bag and your phone.
Consent before anything else
A session cannot begin until consent is captured. That is not a reminder bolted on top of the work. It is built into the order of it, so the ethical step happens by structure rather than by memory. For anyone collecting data under an IRB, that removes one of the easiest and most consequential things to forget.
The app checks your work before you leave
Fieldwork's worst surprises show up after you have packed up and driven home. MM Field Studio runs readiness checks on each case and validates the export before handoff, so it tells you what is missing while you can still fix it, on site, with the participant still in the room. You find the incomplete case in the field, not in the middle of analysis.
Privacy that comes from architecture, not a promise
Everything above runs on the iPad itself. Transcription, sketching, document scanning, and storage all happen on Apple's on-device frameworks, and study data is encrypted at rest behind the device passcode. Participant data never leaves for a server unless you decide to send it. When you are ready, there are two ways out. Send to Desktop moves the case to MM Studio on your Mac through iCloud Drive, so nothing leaves the Apple ecosystem at all. Send to Web uploads it only after an explicit consent step. The app is free, needs no account, and keeps your data on the iPad until you choose to move it. Privacy here is not a pledge in a policy document. It is where the software runs.
What this gives you
Mixed-methods integration is usually described as something you do at the end, joining numbers and narratives once the data is in. The truth is that the join is easiest to keep and hardest to rebuild at the very beginning, in the field, at the moment a person hands you both a rating and a reason. MM Field Studio is built to hold those two together from that first moment and carry them, intact, into MM Studio, where the integrated finding gets written. Do fieldwork this way and the integration you promised is not a paragraph you scramble to defend later. It is something you have been building since the first response.
MM Field Studio is the free iPad companion to ReliCheck MM Studio. It captures linked quantitative and qualitative responses, on-device audio transcription, Apple Pencil sketches, and artifacts, consent-first and encrypted on the device, then hands off to MM Studio on Mac or web.
